Playtheme is a term used by many AFOLs to refer to themes which are specifically designed to be played with more than used for building. Bionicle, Jack Stone and Galidor are examples of playthemes. The latter two in particular were also notorious for the juniorization of parts. A label commonly applied to playthemes which typically provide fewer basic bricks in favour of very specialized elements.

Licensed Themes

Many Licensed Themes' are primarily playthemes with sets usually based on scenes from a movie or television show. While bigger and longer-running franchises like Star Wars include many models that feature no minifigures and are intended primarily for static display other themes like Lone Ranger, Prince of Persia, SpongeBob SquarePants and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are made up almost entirely of playsets.
