A road plate is a baseplate with a road printed on it. Typically these come in straight, curve, tee and cross varieties. Road plates are not injection molded as are most elements but rather formed from sheets of ABS with the studs vacuum formed in, and the pattern printed on, and then sheared off into individual plates

There are many different varieties of road plates in terms of the color of the road (light or dark grey), the markings pattern (crosswalk style, side lines color, etc) and road width (and therefore, the studded area present on the plate, as the road surface is flat)

Some ALEs feel that LEGO has churned the road plates too much, as there have been several versions, and that makes it hard for clubs and individuals to build up a large supply of consistent types.
