Wedges (wedge bricks or wedge plates) are modified bricks (elements that are 24 LDU or 3 plates high) or plates such that the shape is not rectangular in footprint. Wedge plates are sometimes referred to by fans as wings as this is a common use for these elements.
Wedge pieces often come in matched pairs of left and right or upwards and downwards like regular slopes. The LEGO Shape System is a series of such elements designed to work together.

Uses
The Shape System bricks in particular are widely used for Star Wars and Space creations but wedges can also be used to create stairs, faceted rock landscapes, indeed any surface where different angles than 90 degrees are required.
